The Environmental Problem Solving capstone is designed to take an in-depth look at a particular problem in the local region. Its goals are to provide students with real world experience in how decisions are made, and to learn to recognize the policy issues associated with the given topic of the semester. This semester the focus problem is on the World Trade Center Redevelopment Plan in New York City. The students in the class will be separated into groups that will form 'companies.' These companies will then examine the issues and produce an environmental impact statement to evaluate project alternatives in order to advance their design and theoretically secure funding for their projects. The companies will also make a formal presentation of their findings to a body of panelists who work in the public policy arena at the conclusion of the semester.
