The Department of Humanities

The Department of Humanities offers courses and programs that investigate the cultural, social, and scientific contexts that inform contemporary culture. Special emphasis is given to research in the following areas: the study of science, technology, and society; the study of communication and media; the study of professional ethics; and the study of multicultural and international literature. The department is committed to viewing the humanities as a coherent model for examining human society.

Parts I and II of Professor Friedman and Brian Whitworth's "Reinventing Academic Publishing Online" are available in First Monday, http://www.firstmonday.org

Professors Friedman and Brownstein to speak in Berlin

Professors Friedman and Brownstein, along with Brian Whitworth, have had their paper accepted for the 6th International Conference on Technology, Knowledge and Society, which will take place in Berlin during January 2010

Jon Curley's Work to Appear at the Newark Museum

Jon Curley has collaborated with Newark-based filmmakers, Marylou Tibaldo- Bongiorno and Jerome Bongiorno, on a film about contemporary Newark that will be exhibited at the Newark Museum for its Centennial Celebration, September 22-January 10. Curley wrote and recorded the poems that accompany the film. It will be shown in tandem with the 1920 avant-garde film, Manhatta, and become a permament part of the museum's collection.

Jon Curley's New Poetry Volume

Dos Madres Press will publish Jon Curley's poetry volume, New Shadows, this month.

Elena Alexander published in Big City Lit

Big City Lit will publish a poem by Elena Alexander in their Fall issue.

Professor Rothenberg is going on an arctic expedition of artists and scientists this Fall.

Professor David Rothenberg's New Book to be Published by Bloomsbury Press

Professor Rothenberg has signed a contract with Bloomsbury Press to publish his next book, on the evolution of beauty in nature and art, to come out in the Fall of 2011.

Professor Rothenberg's new record "Whale Music Remixed" is out on iTunes, Amazon, and at a music store near you.

Professor Katz was a plenary speaker at the conference of the International Society for the Study or Religion, Nature and Culture (ISSRNC) on July 26, 2009 in Amsterdam. His talk was called "The Paradox of Progress".
